In the year 1502 Christopher Columbus was the first European to set foot on Costa Rican territory, specifically on the Atlantic coast on the beautiful Uvita Island. Columbus was impressed by the amount of wealth he found and that is why the name “Costa Rica” is due, which in English means “Costa Rica”. During the following 3 centuries it was part of the General Captaincy of Guatemala that included the Central American countries, until 1821 when it achieved its independence. In the following decades great political and social changes took place, with the implementation of liberalism, the official currency called “Colon” was created in 1900, and after the economic crisis of 1929, various political parties emerged from social discontent. In 1948 there is an important civil war that at the end establishes the National Liberation Army as winners, and a new political constitution is established, and the army is abolished, which is a source of national pride. Currently Costa Rica is characterized by having one of the most positioned democracies in the world, without an army, and with a constantly growing economy, being the strongest in Central America.
